UBD Sustainability Strategy Committee

About the Committee

The establishment of the UBD Sustainability Strategy Committee marks a significant step in UBD’s journey to embed sustainability across its teaching, research, operations, and community engagement. Comprising senior leaders from faculties, research centres, and administrative officers, the committee is led by the Assistant Vice Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Sustainability). 

By bringing together diverse expertise, the committee ensures a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach to addressing complex challenges and fostering innovative solutions. Close engagement with national counterparts further aligns UBD’s initiatives with Brunei Darussalam’s sustainability priorities, strengthening both institutional and national impact. 

The committee reflect UBD’s commitment to advancing sustainable development within the university while contributing to a more resilient responsible future.

Committee General Responsibilities

The committee is responsible for: 

  • Integrating and aligning sustainability into the university’s strategic plans and mission, ensuring that sustainability is a core component of the university’s long term vision.
  • Providing strategic guidance in relation to the sustainability, and to coordinate efforts to enhance alignment of teaching and learning, research, community outreach, infrastructure and university operations and governance in support of the SDGs.
  • Providing guidance, as appropriate, on the sustainability implications of university policy options.
  • Formulating, reviewing and updating the university’s sustainability blueprint.
  • Overseeing the tracking of progress towards sustainability related goals and targets and assisting the university to measure its impact and report achievements.
  • Reporting sustainability- related initiatives both internally and externally through various channels, including websites, social media and reports.
  • Facilitating brainstorming session on emerging and best sustainability practices through knowledge sharing session and dialogues with key stakeholders.
  • Monitoring and measuring impact of sustainability-related initiatives

Cluster Responsibilities

Each UBD Sustainability Cluster is responsible to: 

  • Formulate respective sustainability strategies and initiatives under their given cluster.
  • Integrate sustainable principles into all operational procedures and promote best practice at every level of the University’s activities.
  • Conduct a comprehensive assessment of the university’s current sustainability initiatives under each clusters, identify progress and areas of improvements.
  • Monitor and report any sustainability –related initiatives to the UBD Sustainability Strategy committee.
  • Promote ‘Sustainability literacy’ under their respective clusters, such that the university’s sustainability principles are understood widely.
  • Organize training programs, workshops, and seminars to enhance the knowledge and skills of university staff, faculty, and students related to sustainability in their respective clusters.
  • Facilitate brainstorming session on emerging and best sustainability practices through knowledge sharing session and dialogues with key stakeholders.
