UBD Statement of Sustainability

Advancing a Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Campus
Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) is committed to fostering a sustainable and eco-friendly campus in alignment with the Brunei Darussalam National Climate Change Policy. As part of this commitment, UBD follows the Protokol Hijau guidelines, which was developed to support the implementations of the Brunei Darussalam National Climate Change Policy.
To minimize its impact on climate change, UBD has implemented a range of strategies focused on sustainability and environmental responsibility. These ongoing initiatives include:
Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy
- Installation of solar panels to harness renewable energy.
- Deployment of LED lighting and smart building systems to optimize energy use.
- Adoption of energy-saving fixtures and practices, such as automated air conditioning, sensor-activated lighting, and campus-wide reminders to reduce energy consumption and switch off appliances when not in use.
Water Conservation Practices
- Using water-saving fixtures, such as push-type taps, to reduce water consumption.
- Report water leaks immediately to the Campus Office, which is responsible for monitoring the maintenance and development of all university buildings and infrastructure.
Carbon Footprint Reduction
- Introduction of electric shuttle buses and shuttle van services to promote green mobility.
- Development of pedestrian-friendly pathways and dedicated biking tracks to encourage sustainable transport.
- Promotion of carpooling to reduce individual vehicle usage.
- Organising events such as conferences, workshops, graduation ceremony and large-scale activities within the university, utilising its own buildings and facilities like Chancellor Hall and Pro Chancellor Arts Centre, to reduce the need for travel.
Waste Reduction & Recycling
- Implementation of digital systems for university management and teaching, including the use of Canvas LMS.
- Transition to digital documentation to reduce paper waste e.g QR Code Scanning System
- Placement of recycling bins across the campus to encourage responsible waste disposal.
- Implementing paper recycling campaigns within the university, where used paper is collected, sorted, and recycled to reduce waste and promote sustainability.
- Encouraging staff and students to bring their own reusable plates, tiffin containers, tumblers, and cutlery to reduce the use of single-use plastics – For example Green Aidilfitri
Green Spaces & Biodiversity
- Tree-planting initiatives to enhance greenery and offset carbon emissions.
- Conservation efforts led by the UBD Botanical Research Centre (BRC), which supports Brunei’s rich biodiversity.
Sustainable Procurement
- Reuse of resources to minimize waste.
- Adoption of eco-friendly office supplies to reduce environmental impact.
- Support for local and SME suppliers to promote sustainable economic growth.
Climate and Sustainability Education
- Implementation of the UBD Sustainability Master Plan to integrate sustainability across university operations.
- Incorporation of sustainability principles into academic courses.
- Interdisciplinary research involving staff, students and international collaborators to address climate change issues.
- Organisation of climate action conference, workshops and awareness campaigns
- Community outreach programs to promote sustainable practices beyond campus.
Through these initiatives, UBD continues to lead by example in advancing environmental stewardship, reducing its carbon footprint, and contributing to a more sustainable future.
